A Look Inside Our Programming

I wanted to take a moment to explain what makes our programming unique. Our main focus is improving general physical preparedness (GPP). Simply put, our goal is to improve overall ability. We want to run faster and farther, lift heavier weights efficiently, and move our own bodies well. That’s the big picture.

When we zoom in a bit, we do this by setting smaller, measurable goals. Every other month, we work toward a test or benchmark. This upcoming January, we’ll be testing the Big 3 lifts: squat, deadlift, and bench press. Because of that, this month’s programming includes a little more focused weightlifting to prepare for those tests. Throughout the year, we rotate our focus to different areas of fitness.

We don’t want to guess if we’re improving—we want to know. Benchmarks help us track progress and make sure the work we’re doing is moving us forward.

Zooming in even more, a typical week of programming includes a mix of strength and conditioning days, one more specific strength-focused day, and a “not for time” day (everyone’s favorite). We use variety and balance to make sure no part of fitness is neglected. Our goal isn’t to specialize in one thing, but to be pretty good at everything.

As Greg Glassman said:
“Develop the capacity of a novice 800-meter track athlete, gymnast, and weightlifter and you’ll be fitter than any world-class runner, gymnast, or weightlifter.”

That philosophy is at the heart of what we do here.
